What each score means
This quiz is scored out of 20 and maps onto four rough ranges. It is an unofficial self-check, not a TOCFL result — the real exam scores listening and reading separately, each out of 80.
0–4 correct — just starting out (TOCFL Pre-Novice range)
You're right at the beginning — and that's a completely normal, great place to start. CiaoSpeak's very first unit, Sounds & Tones, is built exactly for this: the four tones by ear and pinyin's trickiest letters, before a single vocabulary word.
5–10 correct — TOCFL Novice range
You've got some real basics down — greetings, a few core words, maybe a phrase or two. That lines up with TOCFL's Novice range. CiaoSpeak's Greetings, Numbers, and Everyday Words units pick up right about here.
11–16 correct — TOCFL Band A range (roughly Level 1–2)
Solid foundation — you're reading real sentence structure, not just isolated words. That's squarely TOCFL Band A range. CiaoSpeak's Band A units (Comparisons & Time, Life in Taiwan, Festivals & Culture, Staying Connected) build directly on what you already know.
17–20 correct — upper Band A, pushing into Band B
You're already comfortable with grammar patterns, not just vocabulary — that's the edge of Band A pushing into Band B. CiaoSpeak's Band B units (Travel & Transportation, Work & School, Opinions & Hypotheticals) are where harder grammar like 雖然…但是 and 越…越 starts.
Where to find the official TOCFL mock tests (free)
SC-TOP — the organisation that writes the real exam — publishes free downloadable TOCFL sample papers on its own site, under 準備考試 → 模擬試題 (tocfl.edu.tw). Those are the most accurate mock tests available anywhere, because they come from the test writer rather than a third-party approximation.
That same page also links an online simulation platform (線上模擬平台) and sells additional mock papers. The free downloads are the place to start; this quiz is a five-minute orientation, not a replacement for them.
What's actually on the real TOCFL exam
The core TOCFL exam is Listening and Reading, taken together in a single sitting, with each section scored separately — out of 80 on the band-based papers, or on a 700-point scale if you sit the computer-adaptive version. Writing and Speaking are separate registrations, so a standard TOCFL certificate reflects listening and reading comprehension only.
You also register for a band (Novice, A, B or C) rather than an individual level, and the exam decides which of that band's two levels your score clears. Both scoring scales, with every level's cut score, are laid out in TOCFL Levels Explained.
Does this quiz include listening practice?
No — this quiz is reading and vocabulary only, so it cannot tell you anything about your listening level, which is half of your real TOCFL score. For listening specifically, use SC-TOP's own sample papers linked above, which come with the audio the real exam uses.
If you want structured listening practice rather than a test, CiaoSpeak's lessons carry native Taiwan-accent audio on every vocabulary item and dialogue — that is the part a paper mock test cannot give you.
